Elon Musk’s ‘Government Efficiency’ Scheme Just Put Veterans’ Data at Risk—Here’s Why You Should Be Pissed
Veterans’ personal data is now in the hands of Musk’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency,’ and the fallout is just beginning.
If you thought Elon Musk buying Twitter was bad, wait until you hear about what he just got his hands on. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the U.S. Treasury are now tangled in a massive data privacy scandal after Musk’s newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) gained access to one of the most sensitive financial systems in the country—the Treasury’s payment system. That means millions of veterans’ personal information, including Social Security numbers, bank account details, and VA benefits data, are now exposed to Musk’s empire.
Let’s get into what happened, why it’s a damn mess, and what could come next.
Musk’s Takeover of Government Systems Ain’t Just a Joke Anymore
President Trump put Musk in charge of DOGE—yes, that’s really what it’s called—to ‘streamline’ government spending. But in reality, this has given Musk’s people direct access to critical financial infrastructure under the banner of “efficiency.” And now, as reported by Military.com, the implications are horrifying.
Even though Treasury officials claim DOGE has “read-only” access, that’s still a massive cybersecurity risk. You don’t let someone poke around your bank account just because they “promise” not to touch anything. Alan Butler, executive director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, called this a blatant violation of every cybersecurity principle in existence. And he’s right.
Why Should Veterans Be Worried?
If you’re a veteran receiving benefits, here’s what this means for you:
Musk’s team can see your Social Security number, banking info, and benefit payments. That’s right. Your personal details are now part of this grand government experiment.
It raises concerns about benefits being delayed, altered, or even revoked—either on purpose or through sheer incompetence. DOGE is supposed to “streamline” payments, but do you really trust Musk to prioritize your VA check over, say, another vanity project?
There are zero guarantees that this data is safe. Given Musk’s track record with security lapses at Twitter/X, why would anyone believe this won’t end in disaster?
Veterans have already had enough problems getting their benefits on time without a billionaire tech bro “optimizing” the system. This isn’t efficiency. This is a hostile takeover of government operations.
Lawmakers and Advocates Are Sounding the Alarm
Senator Richard Blumenthal, the top Democrat on the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, is calling this a major violation of veterans’ rights. He’s particularly pissed that Musk—who has no background in veterans’ affairs—now has access to personal details like home addresses, banking information, and benefit amounts.
In response, Democratic lawmakers are pushing legislation to block this kind of interference in Treasury operations—because, believe it or not, there are no existing laws stopping an agency like DOGE from just waltzing in and claiming “read-only” access to sensitive data.
And it’s not just politicians raising hell. Two major federal employee unions and the Alliance for Retired Americans have filed a lawsuit against the Treasury Department for violating federal privacy laws by granting DOGE this access.
Where’s the Treasury’s Response? Crickets.
Despite mounting pressure, the Treasury Department hasn’t said a damn thing about how this happened or what safeguards, if any, are in place. The silence speaks volumes. Either they know they screwed up, or they’re too afraid to admit it.
Musk, on the other hand, has been his usual self—mocking concerns on social media and insisting DOGE is just making the government “run smoother.” Sir, you can’t even make a social media app function properly, and now we’re supposed to trust you with federal financial data?
What Happens Next?
This fight isn’t over. With lawsuits underway and lawmakers finally waking up, there’s still a chance to stop Musk’s unchecked power grab before it causes irreparable harm. But make no mistake—the government just handed over a treasure trove of veterans’ financial data to someone who has a history of recklessly handling sensitive information.
For now, veterans need to stay vigilant. Check your benefit deposits, monitor your financial accounts, and raise hell with your representatives. Because if history has taught us anything, it’s that when billionaires start playing with government systems, it’s the people who end up paying the price.
Final Thoughts
This ain’t efficiency. This is a power play at the expense of veterans who’ve already sacrificed enough. The idea that a billionaire tech mogul now has access to military veterans’ benefits data should terrify everyone.
Veterans deserve better than being test subjects in another one of Musk’s grand experiments.
It’s time to demand accountability—before it’s too late.

Subject Line: Civil Liberties Complaint
Hello,
I am making a civil liberties complaint under the Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C. § 552a. It has been brought to my attention that Elon Musk and his associates, under the guise of a directive of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) (an IT office in the White House), have acquired access to Treasury Department Records in Systems of Records as defined in the Act. As an individual covered by the Act, I believe that there may be records about me in these Treasury Department systems, and I am concerned for the following reasons:
Elon Musk is not an elected official.
Even if Musk were an elected official, the System of Records Notices (SORNs) governing the Treasury Department Privacy Act systems do not allow for disclosure to Musk and his associates per the Routine Uses.
Disclosure of personally identifiable information (PII) and sensitive personally identifiable information (SPII) to Musk and his associates would be an unauthorized disclosure and therefore breach of information.
The Treasury Department must (1) quickly investigate what Privacy Act records that Musk and his associates have unlawfully accessed, (2) reveal to the public what unauthorized disclosures were made, (3) stop further access, (4) force any files acquired by Musk and his associates to be returned and/or permanently destroyed, and (5) seek criminal penalties against Musk and his associates for violations of the Act.
Sincerely,
