I’m Tired of Writing About Trump: The Exhaustion of Covering America’s Slow-Motion Crisis
When the News Cycle Becomes Psychological Warfare
I have covered Donald Trump so much over the last decade that I swear I have aged a lifetime. Gray hairs sprouting like weeds, patience worn thin, exhaustion sitting in my bones like I just spent a tour in a war zone. And really, isn’t that exactly what this has been? A war. A psychological war waged on the American public with tactics so effective that future political science students will be writing dissertations on how the fabric of democracy was unraveled in real time.
Make no mistake—this isn’t hyperbole. What we have witnessed, what we continue to witness, is not just a political struggle. It’s a deliberate, calculated assault on truth, on institutions, and on the very idea of what it means to be American.
And the worst part? Too many people are willing participants in their own destruction.
How Do You Vote for the Antithesis of American Values?
Let’s be real—Trump is the direct opposite of every value America claims to hold dear. We’re talking about a man who:
Was adjudicated a sexual predator.
Is brazenly corrupt and openly uses public office for personal financial gain.
Admired and aligned himself with dictators while publicly scorning democracy.
Told us to our faces how he would dismantle American institutions—and followed through.
Encourages political violence and seeks revenge against his perceived enemies.
Tried to overturn an election through coercion, fraud, and brute force.
And yet, here we are.
It’s well known that in American politics, you cannot be elected president as a single man. That’s too “untraditional.” Too much of a break from the perceived “American family values.” But you can be elected as an adjudicated sexual predator, a fraudster, a liar, and a man actively working to undermine democracy—so long as you fit a certain mold.
Psychological Warfare on the American People
This didn’t happen by accident. Trump’s rise was made possible by years of carefully sown division, disinformation, and exploitation of cultural grievances. His entire political career has been built on deflection and projection—accusing others of the crimes he himself is committing, rallying his base around false narratives of persecution, and painting himself as both a victim and a savior.
This is psychological warfare at its finest.
Step 1: Flood the zone with misinformation.
Make it impossible for people to discern truth from lies. Tell them not to trust the media, the experts, or even their own eyes.
Step 2: Normalize corruption and authoritarianism.
Turn once-outrageous behavior into an everyday occurrence. Desensitize people to chaos so that nothing shocks them anymore.
Step 3: Exploit grievances and fears.
Use racism, economic anxiety, and religious extremism to create an “us vs. them” mentality. Make people believe that their enemies aren’t the ones in power but rather their fellow citizens.
Step 4: Erase history in real time.
When all else fails, rewrite the past. Call the January 6th insurrection “a peaceful protest.” Pretend that Trump was the greatest jobs president when his policies led to record deficits and economic decline. Gaslight the public into believing things that are objectively untrue—and then punish those who dare challenge the lies.
The Role of Racism in Trump’s Rise
You cannot discuss Trump’s rise to power without addressing the deep, embedded racism in America.
Because let’s be honest—Barack Obama broke a lot of white people’s brains.
The first Black president sent millions into a tailspin. The mere thought of a world where whiteness was not inherently dominant was too much to bear. “They are taking over the country!” So when Trump came along, spewing birther conspiracies, openly embracing white supremacists, and saying the quiet part out loud? They saw him as their last hope.
And that’s what makes his presidency (and re-election) so dangerous. He didn’t just ride the wave of racism—he amplified it. He made it acceptable again.
Let’s not forget:
He called for the execution of the Central Park Five, even after they were exonerated.
He told four congresswomen of color to “go back” to their countries.
He referred to African nations as “shithole countries.”
He defended white supremacists in Charlottesville.
He tried to disenfranchise millions of Black voters in 2020.
And his supporters ate it up. They saw him as their last hope to turn back the clock to a time when they didn’t have to pretend to care about equality.
America’s Willing Descent Into Authoritarianism
Here’s what history will never understand: Trump told us exactly what he was going to do.
He didn’t hide it. He didn’t sugarcoat it. He openly declared his intent to destroy democracy, and people still lined up to hand him the power to do it.
He campaigned on retribution.
He promised to jail his political opponents.
He vowed to weaponize the Department of Justice.
He aligned himself with dictators and war criminals.
This isn’t politics. This is authoritarianism.
And yet, nearly half the country embraced it.
I Am Tired, But I Will Not Be Silent
I am exhausted. Truly. Covering this man for nearly a decade has felt like screaming into the void while people willingly march toward their own destruction.
But I will not stop.
Because that’s what they want—for people to get tired. For us to become numb. For the slow drip of chaos to wear us down to the point where we just accept it.
I refuse. This is what I was sent into other countries to fight, only to see it infect my own.
History will not be kind to those who stood by while democracy was dismantled. And trust me—when the dust settles, when the damage is laid bare, when the world looks back at this moment and asks, “How did this happen?”—the answer will be simple.
America let it happen.
And the cost of that mistake will haunt us for generations to come.
